Front Door Evangelism: Living Missionally in 2019

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (CSB)

Have you ever stopped and really considered just how convenient the modern day life is? I mean, one can click a few buttons on a phone and within a short span of time—boom!—groceries are delivered! Yet, something struck me a while back regarding our modern age; we are more “connected” than ever, yet STARVING for real person-to-person interactions. No matter where you are, faces are cast downward, not in sadness, but in intense interest of whatever is on their personal glowing screen. My point? People seem more and more preoccupied (and frankly, distracted) with silly cat videos than interacting with the next human sitting in a waiting room with them. My heart longs to connect people with the God who made them—and this new reality of our current first world nation has really been a burden on my heart—until—DELIVERY!

And just like that, with one word, the dynamics of an entire way of trying to reach various people groups while being a stay-at-home homeschooling mama changed…we can live missionally for Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20) even while receiving our groceries! How is this possible you may be asking? Well, simply put, we just must be willing to OPEN THE FRONT DOOR.

As groceries, pizza, etc. are delivered to your door, a brief one-on-one interaction with a perfect stranger is presented—right on your front door step! No screens. No distractions of this or that. Simply a snippet in time that can beautifully hold the question “In whom are you trusting for your eternal salvation?” Will it catch people off guard, yep. Will it make some people laugh, possibly. But if we TRULY love people (John 3:16) as we are called to love people, it is not a matter of looking good or even appealing to what is politically correct in a given political climate. No, to live missionally for the Lord Jesus Christ is to boldly declare that each life we interact with matters in light of eternity—and Jesus Christ proved it by dying on the cross as the punishment for human failings of all humanity—while He Himself was without fault—to ransom and redeem any and all who would call upon Him to be saved (Romans 10:9-10).

May I challenge you? The next time you order delivery (be it for groceries, take-out, etc.) see it as a way of being a missionary…from your own front door! No passport required. No special language training necessary. Simply open the door and be willing to be a bold witness for the Lord Jesus Christ and convey the love of Jesus Christ for that individual in delivery clothing.

Remember, it is the Holy Spirit who convicts hearts and wins souls. We are responsible to faithfully share, but it is up to the Holy Spirit to draw people to Himself. So, don’t sweat it if the delivery person isn’t willing to accept Jesus right then and there. But!!! Do not allow that to hinder you from sharing of the powerful, eternal and life-altering truth that JESUS ACTUALLY LOVES THEM (1 John 4:9-10)…and proved it by dying on the cross and rising from the dead on the third day.

27And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” Romans 9:27-28 (NASB)

Well, the time is now church. We can impact the nations of the world right from our own homes now through modern conveniences. The only question that remains is — what’s for dinner? How about DELIVERY
