DAILY DEVOTIONAL by Katie Messer: “Through The Valley Of Achor”

Week Fourteen, Day Seven

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:2-4 (NASB).

There are many “teachers” of the Bible today who want to sell their own brand of salvation. It is called by many names, but the message is all the same: EARN YOUR WAY to heaven and rely upon your own power. Some claim that by chanting and even taking part in smudging ceremonies…claiming this is Biblical; Ladies, let me be frank…this is a lie from the pit of hell as smudging is associated with witchcraft. Witchcraft is strictly forbidden in the Bible (Leviticus 19:31, Leviticus 20:27, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, 1 Samuel 28:3-20). Some will even state that “grave sucking” — the practice of laying on top of the tomb of a passed Christian hero will somehow give you ‘more power”. Ladies, this is demonic and there is no scripture to support such a practice (Matthew 12:22-27, 1 John 4:4). As 1 John 4:2-4 states boldly, we need to TEST EVERY SPIRIT…not just the ones who claim to not be Christians. I grew up in a church where the pastor encouraged us to listen with our BIBLES OPEN because everyone can make mistakes! So, we must be as the BEREAN BELIEVERS and SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES DAILY to make sure that what we are hearing in a sermon, reading in print or listening to in a song squares up with the Word of God. If not, no matter how “popular” an individual may be, if what they are saying is false, DO NOT LISTEN. Ladies, hear me now, CHEW ON AND SAVOR the Word of God. When a question arises, do not run to social media to find an answer—which is growing more and more censored—turn to the Word of God. If there was ever a time where we MUST stand firm upon the teaching of Jesus within the Holy Bible, it is now. Ladies, it’s time to hit our knees and pray for revival in our word. May repentance begin in our own hearts first (Acts 19:13-20).

There is only ONE NAME given to humanity by which any soul can be saved, and that is Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). There is no sorcerer, there is no tarot card, there is no psychic, no other religious leaders, no karma…NO OTHER NAME by which we can be saved apart from Jesus Christ.

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, I’m overwhelmed by all that is taking place around me, yet, in YOU I find my strength. Help me to point others to YOU and Your Gospel. You came to seek and save any and all who would call upon Your name. How beautiful to recall even Your twelve disciples…sooo different from each other yet UNITED in their devotion to You, Lord Jesus. Help me to be CROSS EYED and see people through the offered REDEMPTION of each of our own sins through the sacrifice of Your own innocent life by dying on a cross and raising from the dead on the third day. I love You, Lord Jesus. Revive the nations of the world by the conviction of Your Holy Spirit—we each need Your rescue. Thank You for saving me from all the wrong I have done, thought and said. Help me now to be used for Your glory and the good of those in need. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Week Fourteen, Day Six

So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you, and they will support you with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.” After the Devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time. “ Luke 4:9-13 (NASB)

Anyone who believes that we battle against demonic spirits and powers who are not clever, are horribly mistaken. Yet, may we as followers of Jesus Christ take this account of Jesus Christ Himself being tempted by the devil, as a great encouragement! For although the devil tried to use the Holy Scriptures against Jesus, to justify evil (e.g. worshipping the devil rather than God)— Jesus knew the Holy Scriptures fully! Ladies, in the midst of trials and tribulations, may we speak the truths of the Bible to the evil that tries to discourage, damage and defeat the Lord’s work in us and through our testimonies. Jesus knew that we are not to test the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:16). Jesus knew that man will never live by material things alone, but have constant need for the Word of God in our lives (Deuteronomy 8:3). Jesus knew, despite the hardships of 40 days of fasting and temptation in the desert, that we are to worship the Lord alone and serve Him only (Deuteronomy 6:13). In declaring Scripture back to the devil, Jesus was victorious over the devil’s temptation. There was nothing more for the devil to say for he too knew these Scriptures to be absolutely true and he left defeated by the Son of God, Jesus Christ. And praise God, that when Christ later went to the brutal cross to die as an innocent man and rose again on the third day (Matthew 16:21, Acts 2:24), the devil was rendered eternally defeated as we too (all who choose to renounce any other way to finding peace with God except through Jesus Christ alone) were given freedom over death and eternal destruction (1 Peter 2:24).

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, the attacks are so real. It is so easy to grow bitter. It is so easy to NOT love or care about those who cause such violent and intentional harm. Yet, as You showed by example, we must know the Scriptures for ourselves. And You tell us that if we hate someone in our heart, it’s as evil as murder in Your sight. FORGIVE ME Lord Jesus and have mercy on me…a sinner. Help me to not think of myself as better or less evil than those engaging in different sins. In Your eyes, ALL sin is equally offensive to You…and that’s why we ALL NEED YOUR FORGIVENESS AND RESCUE. Thank You for forgiving me. Help me to forgive as I want to be forgiven. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Week Fourteen, Day Five

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20 (NASB)

There comes a time in every life whether married or single, young or old, successful or not, where you think to yourself “What is the purpose of my life?” And May I say, that is a beautifully honest question! And also, beautifully simple—you were placed on this spinning planet to bring glory to God. To know Him and to be known fully by Him. This God loved you so much—yes, YOU, right where you are reading this from—that He sent His one and only Son to die on a cross as an innocent man for the rebellion each and every person has done in this life. And on the third day, Hallelujah, THE SON OF GOD, Jesus Christ AROSE FROM THE DEAD! Wow! Thank You, Jesus! Why would I state this over and over in this devotional? Because it is the crux of the faith as a Christian. And because Jesus Christ lives, I now live to SERVE HIM. I want to use each day to wait upon His Spirit and meditate upon His Word for each day, there is purpose through Jesus Christ for every life. May you give your life to Him today if you haven’t yet done this. You will find peace for each day that outweighs any understanding. Trust in Jesus Christ this very day.

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, thank You for forgiving me of my sins—my rebellion against You. Thank You for accepting me into Your family and infusing each day with purpose and each human interaction with meaning. Thank You for speaking to my heart while alone with You in nature. Thank You for such great LOVE for all humanity that You showed through the great sacrifice of Your own life for each of our wrongdoings. Help me to speak of You and share of your great love to a world so desperately in need of YOU, Lord Jesus. I’m ready to be used for You and look beyond my circumstances for You alone are worthy of my praise. And Your very words assure me that You love all people from all cultures and backgrounds. Make me a person marked by Your love and Your passion for all people. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Don’t be afraid, Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for 21 days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia.” Daniel 10:12-13 (HCSB)

Daniel was a prophet in the Old Testament whom was treasured by God (Daniel 10:11). As Daniel fasted and prayed for three weeks to receive clarity on a troubling dream that he had received, evil powers launched an attack to thwart the plans of God. As we read in Daniel 10:13, the angelic messenger had been detained for 21 days by the “prince of Persia”. There had been so much strife in fact that one of the archangels, Michael,  (Daniel 10:13) had then been sent to free the messenger with God’s answer for Daniel’s prayer. Much like the “prince of Persia” was defeated by the soldiers of the Lord’s armies, may we too rest assured that despite the spiritual war that is waging on around us—the victory belongs to all who put there undivided hope in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:37).

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, my spirit feels so heavy with all that is happening right now. I feel like I have cried out to You for so long for rescue, but I’m still right in the thick of it. What an encouragement this passage from Your Holy Scripture is to KEEP PRAYING, KEEP TRUSTING, KEEP BELIEVING. I will not allow the demonic attacks to stop me from praising You. I believe Your Word that I have the victory in YOU (the entire chapter of 1 John chapter 5). And Jesus, You told Your disciples to that in this life trials would come, but to be encouraged for You have overcome the world (John 16:33). I’m so grateful to be on the winning team. I love You, Jesus. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray all these things, amen.

Week Fourteen, Day Three

All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” Romans 8:14-15 (HCSB)

When tragedy hits, it’s easy to feel alone, isolated and unavoidably depressed. But, praise God Almighty we can cry out “DADDY!!! Daddy, help!!” This is true for any and all who have trusted upon the Lord Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior of the soul. What a privilege! As a follower of Jesus Christ, the Holy Bible assures is that we have been granted ACCESS to call out to God Almighty through His Son Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:16). Wow! And if that wasn’t enough, Jesus then shared of a special gift and iron clad promise was given; the Holy Spirit. John 16:11-14 records Jesus speaking to His disciples before He is to soon die on the cross for claiming to be God. Jesus was speaking of the HOLY SPIRIT that would come once He was to return to God the Father in heaven. The HOLY SPIRIT (also called the HELPER, ADVOCATE, COMFORTER) is the precious and BEAUTIFUL promised gift for ALL who trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Let us steep in the beauty of the context of Jesus’ powerful promise from John 16 in the New Testament of the Holy Bible:

5“But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6“But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, I believe that You died upon a cross for my wrongs here on earth. I believe that You raised from the dead on the third day, just as You said You would (John 10:17-18). I also believe that because I have trusted my everything to You as my Lord and Savior, that I too have the Holy Spirit living within my heart. Thank You for Your comfort in this horribly traumatic time. Thank You for caring enough about me and those I love to have given me The Comforter (The Holy Spirit). Thank You for never leaving me alone. Help me to glorify You as I choose to trust and praise You, as I am learning how to rely more upon You and the truths of Your Word, rather than simply what I can see. I love You, Lord Jesus. Thank You for Your tender care. In Jesus’ victorious name I pray, amen.

Week Fourteen, Day Two

But you,” He asked them, “who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” And Jesus responded, “Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven.” Matthew 16:15-17

May we never forget the moment we came to know Jesus Christ as the Son of God deep in our souls for new birth of the souls came that very moment. May we never forget the reality of freedom from eternal punishment in hell, for our own rebellion against God, that very second we called upon the name of Jesus Christ to be saved. And may we never forget that it God Himself who convicts our hearts of our rebellion and shows us our need for spiritual rescue through Jesus Christ alone. Peter was assured of this very thing by the Lord Jesus when Peter answered who Jesus was. In the same way, when we find ourselves in difficult and seemingly unbearable circumstances, may we not try to rely upon our own futile and mortal strength, but call upon God to show us how to best bring glory and honor to Jesus amidst the chaos and confusion. Remember, NOTHING IS WASTED in our lives (Romans 8:28). Did you read that? Let’s say it again because it is so important, NOTHING IS WASTED with God. Thus, no matter what challenges may be staring you in the eyes, remember that God is in control and He will lead you through as you submit to HIS will and rely upon Him (Psalm 32:8).

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, forgive me for my anger. Forgive me for my temper. Forgive me for what I write without thinking. The Book of James talks about taking my tongue, Lord Jesus, help me to tame my thumbs! Help me to run to You rather than social media when I am sad. Help me to remember that it is You who reveals truth. Thank You for revealing to me that Jesus Christ is the Risen Son of God. Help me to honor You even now…in the midst of all this. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL by Katie Messer: “Through The Valley Of Achor” Week Fourteen, Day One & God Is There: A Battle Cry Amidst The Battle Of The Mind

DAILY DEVOTIONAL by Katie Messer: “Through The Valley Of Achor”

Theme of Week Fourteen, Our God Is Victorious

Week Fourteen, Day One

Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand.” Ephesians 6:10-13 (HCSB)

Many times when troubles arise, we see them strictly through a physical lens. In doing so, we neglect the spiritual truth that we do not battle against flesh and blood, but against the demonic forces of the devil who is out to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10a) our peace, life and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at every opportunity. How wonderful to know that as followers of Jesus Christ, we have been given an entire armor of God (Ephesians 6:14-18). We must be constantly praying in the spirit, and staying keenly aware of the devil, who is like a prowling lion seeking to devour those who can be lured away (1 Peter 5:8). As a soldier for the Lord Jesus Christ, every Christian has the ability to resist the devil and scripture tells us that he will flee (James 4:7).

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, You give me the ultimate victory over every difficulty in this life through Your name and by Your unmatched authority. Thank You for the tools and weaponry You provide each believer to stand firm against the devil and his despicable schemes that try to destroy our relationship and reliance upon You. Help me to learn more what it means to trust You. Help me to know what to do next with regard to ____________. I feel as though I am just so small compared to the behemoth of my problems. Thank You for the reminder of my strength and power that comes from You alone, Lord Jesus. Help me to stand in confidence against the devil as these unknowns continue to flood my way and answers are needed at every turn. Thank You for loving me and walking with me in this battle to the undeniable victory in You, Lord Jesus. It’s in Your powerful and victorious name I pray, amen.

God Is There: A Battle Cry Amidst the Battle of The Mind

In the cool of the morning, in the quiet of the night, God is there.

As fears become behemoths and worries turn into dragons, God is there.

He encourages us to thrown our fears, our concerns, our disappointments and our deepest regrets before His awesome throne of grace. Not only to bring our troubles, but to personally come—with boldness—into the Lord Jesus’ presence because of His undying compassion and love for you (Hebrews 4:16). Do you hear that?

Right where you are at this very second, the God who made you—loves YOU.

In times of deepest sorrow where horrifying memories replay in your minds, the Lord Jesus is there…ready to be your comfort (Isaiah 57:15). The Lord Jesus is ready to minister to your grieving heart (Psalm 147:3). He is ready to save you in the midst of your broken and crushed heart(Psalm 34:18).

Today in the midst of heavy layers of grief and sorrow, may you be encouraged of the love God has for each sou. So much love in fact that He sent His one and only Son to ransom and redeem each soul who would trust His Son, Jesus Christ as their master and only way to wipe the filthy thoughts, words and actions from each personal life.

If you have never made a commitment to follow the Lord Jesus Christ and do not have the peace of eternal security with God and assurance of heaven nailed down in your heart, I invite you to do so this very moment.

Simply pray, Lord Jesus, I have made a mess of my life. I cannot fix all the broken pieces, but I know You take broken things and make them whole. I ask for Your forgiveness of my failings and ask for You to come live in my heart as the ruler and Lord of my life. I believe You lived a perfect life. I believe that You lived a perfect life free from failures and that You died upon the cross to pay for my wrongdoings. I believe that You rose from the dead on the third day and that all who believe in You as Lord and Savior will get to live with You in heaven forever. Thank You for loving me enough to do all that. I accept You into my heart this day (write the date down here)_____________. In my Lord and Savior Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Interlude: Geographic Divide

DAILY DEVOTIONAL by Katie Messer: “Through The Valley Of Achor”

Geographical Divide

As the kids and I now returned from the airport and began the process of adjustment to a year without daddy’s constant, physical presence, God gave us a blessing. As we awaited our boxes to arrive from the Middle East as well as our second vehicle in the coming weeks, God gave us a blessing. As we celebrated our son’s third birthday party in the midst of the freshly arrived boxes, God gave us a blessing. For different people God can bless in different ways and in different times. But, in our case, each and every time that we cried out to the Lord, our prayers were answered by the physical presence of our family and new friends. Both near and far, our family supported us in the midst of this bumpy transition through hopping on airplanes, falling to their knees in prayer, and popping by to encourage and provide practical help. My heart was so blessed as we realized that for the first time in six years, we were able to share a town with our own kin—and we were so grateful. Hardships continued through the weeks, but we were overwhelmed with the reality of family, friends and church family stepping to the plate to pray alongside and help when needed.

If you are not living near to family in your time of crisis, I strongly encourage you to plug into a Christian church where you can fellowship and receive encouragement—both physical as well as spiritual during this season. Along with the Lord’s spiritual companionship, He will provide a group of people to share the journey with you, in His perfect timing and in His perfect way according to His perfect will.

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the God of gods, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.”Psalm 136:1-3 (NASB)

Recall the faithfulness of the LORD. Proclaim the lovingkindness of the LORD. Have ready access to the documented accounts of personal victory of the Lord. In doing so, when times are difficult, you will be able to quickly flip to personal stories of the Lord’s mercies, love and divine intervention within your life. As Christians, we need to constantly be recounting the Lord’s goodness to encourage and remind our souls of the Lord’s loving care. Ladies, give thanks to the Lord, for He alone is good and our everlasting stronghold in times of trouble (Nahum 1:7).His love and lovingkindness are everlasting (Psalm 100:5). Despite the difficulty, I encourage you this day to counsel your own soul with the truth of Psalm 136:1-3 and count the powerful attributes of our God. He is more than able to rescue, save and lead you to victory (Psalm 37:39). Allow the false notion of control to break free from your hands and watch the Lord Jesus work in His perfect and sovereign plan (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

Prayer For Today:

Dear Lord Jesus, You are the Lord of Lords and the God of gods. Thank You for each time in my life where You have fought on my behalf. Thank You for truly caring for my well-being and providing opportunities to grow closer to You through each new season of life. Thank You that Your character of goodness, love, justice, mercy and lovingkindness do not change. Thank You for shower mercy to me, as I have brought shame to You many times in my life by the way I have chosen to react, treat or even think in a situation that is contrary to what Your Holy Word teaches me. I am aware that one imperfect act is enough to condemn me to eternal separation from You forever. But, I am also keenly aware that by Your amazing grace I have been saved from my screw ups and myself as I have apologized for my failed attempts and turned to You for the leadership and rescuing of my life (Ephesians 2:8-9). Thank You for infusing each breath of each day with divine purpose (Ephesians 2:10)—even this season of sustained heartache. Thank You for loving each person across the globe, from before the beginning of time. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tentand set me high upon a rock. Psalm 27:4-5 (NIV)

Fellowship with other believers in Jesus Christ is a gift from God. In this passage of scripture, the psalmist is conveying his great affection for the house of God; the temple. How beautiful it is to be able to gather together to celebrate the goodness, the faithfulness, the loving-kindness and ever-present help that we have access to as followers of Jesus Christ! The Lord Jesus has provided for us, protected us and granted safe passage for us in ways we will never fully know this side of heaven. The Lord Jesus restores our focus with His eternal perspective. He realigns our path with His steady hand. He refreshes our hearts with His everlasting truths of love and devotion during each day of each season of our lives. And He affirms our souls with the beautiful reality that He is coming again for all who believe that He alone is the Messiah and Risen Son of God. Hallelujah! Gladness and a steady heart are the result of an anchored truth. May we rejoice and be very glad as we anchor our hearts to the truths of His Word!

Prayer For Today:

Lord Jesus, I am undone! I am unworthy of Your goodness, of Your faithfulness and Your victory over the trials of this life! Thank You for the freedom You have given to each one who seeks after You as their Savior. Please minster to (name)__________ today. You see what is going on and all the vast complexities. Lord Jesus, please make Yourself real to (name)_____________ today. I make myself available to be used as Your hands and Your feet today to extend Your grace, Your love and Your encouragement to (name)___________ today. I trust You and want this season to not be wasted in despair! I want to be used by You, Lord Jesus! In the midst of this muck and mire, Oh Lord, would You please use me?! I am willing, but I realize that I am so less that ideal for the job of representing You accurately in all Your perfection. Please forgive me and use me, despite my many failings. Thank You for Your forgiveness. Thank You for Your security. Thank You for Your unabashed love for me that encourages me to step out in boldness for Your great name’s sake. I love You, Jesus! I am listening, with a humble and undeserving heart, I want to make this season if difficulty count for the furthering of Your kingdom to spread Your hope, Your love and Your eternal rescue to others caught in the snare of depression, deep disbelief and utter despair. You are so good! I am ready, Lord Jesus! In Jesus’ most holy and most precious name I pray, amen.
